Halfway There

April 4, 2010

I’ve been busy for the past couple of weeks (since when was I not busy? haha) juggling school work and doing my portfolio because next term I’ll be doing my OJT. The portfolio website is starting to come out great, but I’m not going to “publish” it just yet. There’s a lot of stuff that needs to be added and when it’s out I want it to be packed. :D

Most of the stuff I have there for now are the websites I worked on as requirements for my Web classes at school and a little bit (as in a small percentage of) freelance work, so little I can’t put them for portfolio display for some reason.. *cough*Would you like to be a part of my portfolio?*cough* I’ve received few web tasks to do here and there, and I’m still looking. My thoughts for now about looking for freelance jobs online are: BOY, NOBODY TOLD ME THIS IS NOT AN EASY THING TO DO!

For the most part, I’ve only tried to look for freelance jobs online.. but that’s only half of it. We also have to work for a company as part of it, and having insufficient knowledge when it comes to company jobs that puts me in n00b level.

We’re supposed to attend this seminar at school before we can apply to any company during the start of the term and it’s supposed to cover the basic etiquette of it, I suppose corporate attire, behavior, what to say and not to say are covered. But you know, there are still things that you need to know from people who’ve been in that road..

So what I’m trying to say is: Any tips for lil ol’ me who’s going to face the real (design company/firm) world (industry) soon? Do’s and dont’s in job interviews, mannerisms, the outfit, etc etc.?

Oh yeah, have I mentioned that I don’t have any break at all this summer? My classes are still on-going and after this term, I’ll have summer classes (on a subject that I’ll be retaking for the 3rd time  ), and then AFTER that my 4th year in college begins, the same year I’ll be taking my OJT. The only break I’ll have the is the time I have every time I get home from school during my summer classes from 8AM-12:40PM.. I hope I can squish some freelance work/company hunting in that time.

And dear god, please let me pass that f’n subject this time. I remember the entry I made at my tumblr about having a party if I pass the subject. I’m not counting on it but there will be a celebration if it does happen.

Video editing class is OK.. I’m (finally but) slowly learning how to use Adobe Premiere. But it’s been confusing for me this past week cause of the topic that was given to me to shoot. We were assigned sounds to incorporate to our narrative videos but I can’t think of a story that’s suitable for the one that I got. Ah well, I’ll work on something tomorrow.

Gotta go back to trying to add more stuff on my portfolio! Oh, oh, refer me to your buddies who are looking for a web designer/developer as well! I also do other stuff besides web, which I will showcase on the portfolio…. soon. ;)

    Hello Anna!

It’s nice to get new visitors and I’m pleased to know that you related in some way. I tend to feel like I’m a lot nicer then them too. Which is kind of sad since some of my friends treat me like crap (well I’m exaggerating, but by not listening, I feel like it’s crap anyways). Through everything, I still manage to force a smile and nod my head whenever they have some other ridiculous story they want me to hear. Nowadays, I feel like I’m drifting off or I’ll ignore them while they continue babbling on about whatever. In a sense, I kind of want to make them feel how I feel — but I don’t think they seem to notice… how sad. =.=

You’d think they’d use Google or whatever to find their answers, but face it, people are lazy these days. They want you as their first option, or they don’t want you at all. Seriously, I’m starting to think that half of the people I talk to, only talk to me when they need something. :/ Like what the hell.

LOL I get what you mean about not wanting to be ditched first, but somehow, they always manage to beat me to it. Some people have been encouraging me to post offline related things, even if some people won’t listen, you do have a number of devoted readers that will listen. To be honest, not many people do have best friends nowadays do they? Most of the people that left me comments said they drifted a part from their friends — kind of makes me feel more fortunate. I’m sure you’ll find someone! I mean, it’s not like you’re searching for a soul mate… not really. XD

I try to be selfish once every blue moon, but people… do they know how to make you feel guilty. It’s like jfhjsdhgjdhfkhgfkdsgjfkgd. Haha

Thank you! I appreciate your comment about my layout. :3

Now to comment your lovely blog~

At least you are busy; what I’d give to tell someone, “Sorry! I’m too busy.” That is a total lie. I love to look at portfolios and see how people have progressed; can’t wait to see yours!

If it’s work for your portfolio, I suppose I could “help”; though I don’t really know what you mean by “being apart of your portfolio” exactly. XD I would imagine that they would be difficult to look for freelance jobs. Dx People are kind of picky these days.

I know at school, they teach us the procedures and whatnot on what not to do/do during job interviews or whatever — I would imagine that they’re technically the same thing.

My teacher once told me, whatever you do in terms of how you shake the person’s hand, determines RIGHT AWAY if they will hire you or not. It doesn’t matter if you have perfect attire and your interview was flawless — if you don’t shake a hand a certain way, it’ll show if you’re too demanding or too weak. Seems silly, right?

I personally don’t know if that’s true or not, but in a way, it does seem to make sense…

Another thing, when talking, try to remain eye contact with the person, if your eyes wander, it’ll show them that you have a hard time paying attention — remaining eye contact shows boldness.

As far as attire goes, just don’t wear anything with holes and such with them (obviously); I would suggest a more “business suit”. It shows that you’re ready to get down to business. ;D

Erm… there’s more, but to be honest, I can’t think of anything right now. ^^”

That really sucks that you have summer class… hopefully everything goes smoothly for you though. Good luck! :D

Oohhhh portfolios. I love looking at web design portfolios :) I’m only a sophomore in college so I can’t really help you out regarding entering the wed development industry but I do wish you do just fine :)

Maybe try asking your parents if they have friends who needs your web development services? :) Good luck though!

I have summer classes too! 7:30AM-12NN :| I have to wake up early. This means I don’t have summer so you are not alone! :) )

It’s summer classes also for me too. :D
Hmm, have you tried posting ads on Craigslist? :D

Woah. Whenever I hear about portfolios I get a weird feeling that makes me wanna start my own. But blech, I fail each and every time. Bakit nga naman ako gagawa eh ano rin maipapakita ko? I lost the talent. Or natatamad lang talaga. Hoho. Goodluck with that! And I agree with Kimeh’s suggestion. Try craigslist.

    I miss it here. (:
